Destruction Caused by Cyclone Daniel in Eastern Libya, Death Toll Surpasses 5,000

The coastal city of Derna in eastern Libya has been devastated by the sea cyclone “Daniel,” resulting in a death toll that has surpassed 5,000 due to the cyclone and flash floods. Over 5,000 individuals are reported missing, and among the casualties are three Red Crescent relief workers. According to the spokesperson for emergency services, the number of injured in flooding and various incidents has exceeded 7,000.
The city of Derna, with a population of over a hundred thousand, has suffered damage to four vital bridges, two buildings, and two dams. Besides Derna, the areas of Jabal al-Akhdar, Ben Ghazi, and Al-Marj have also seen significant property damage on a large scale. Floodwaters have swept away residential areas and communities.
Relief agencies are currently assisting displaced populations. The government has appealed for immediate international and local assistance to address the devastation caused by the sea cyclone.
