Japan Doubles Its Goal for EV Charger Installations by 2030

The Japanese government has revised its target for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, now aiming for 300,000 by the year 2030.

According to the updated guidelines, Japan’s Ministry of Industry has launched a plan to support the deployment of standard EV chargers primarily at private and commercial locations, and fast chargers, especially at highway rest areas.

As of now, Japan has approximately 30,000 EV chargers distributed across the nation. With the new strategy, the goal is to increase the number of standard charger outlets to 270,000 and fast charger outlets to 30,000 by 2030.

The ministry’s objective is to expedite the installation of EV chargers in order to achieve its overarching goal of having electrified vehicles, including hybrids, constitute 100 percent of new car sales by 2035.

Japan had previously set a target of 150,000 charging stations by 2030 as part of its Green Growth Strategy. However, with Japanese automakers like Toyota Motor expected to bolster domestic EV sales, the government deemed it necessary to revise the charger target, recognizing their significance in expanding EV adoption.
