Islamabad : The International Federation of Digital Media Journalists** strongly condemns the recent arrest of senior journalist Matiullah Jan and the baseless terrorism case filed against him.
Matiullah Jan’s arrest is a grave attack on press freedom and a blatant violation of the fundamental rights and freedom of expression guaranteed under the Constitution of Pakistan. Accusing a journalist of terrorism is an attempt to tarnish their professional credibility and seems to be part of a larger conspiracy to silence independent voices.
Journalism is a sacred profession that plays a vital role in promoting truth and transparency in society. Threatening journalists or levying false allegations against them goes against the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The International Federation of Digital Media Journalists demands the following:
- Immediate release of Matiullah Jan.
- Withdrawal of the fabricated terrorism case against him.
- Ensuring the safety and protection of journalists, enabling them to perform their duties without fear or intimidation.
We also call upon global journalistic organizations, human rights institutions, and civil society to raise their voices on this matter and stand united for the protection of journalists’ rights.
The International Federation of Digital Media Journalists stands firmly for press freedom and will continue to speak out against any actions that seek to undermine it.
