Pakistan has emphasized the urgent necessity for united global endeavors to address the escalating inequality and counteract the concerning resurgence of poverty.
Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, conveyed these sentiments in a statement delivered today during the General Debate at the Financing for Development Forum (FFD) held at the UN headquarters in New York.
Drawing attention to the harsh reality of over 150 million individuals slipping back into poverty in recent years, Ambassador Jadoon stressed the vital importance of fulfilling the commitments outlined in the 2030 Agenda and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
He remarked that the deficiency lies not in solutions, but rather in the absence of political will to implement them. Ambassador Jadoon cited the longstanding failures to meet the 0.7% Official Development Assistance (ODA) target and to mobilize $100 billion annually for climate finance as indicative examples.
Anticipating the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development scheduled to take place in Spain next year, the Pakistani deputy UN envoy expressed optimism regarding its potential to rebuild trust between the Global North and Global South. He emphasized the imperative to rejuvenate political determination to honor existing commitments and explore innovative approaches to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Financing Gap.
Ambassador Jadoon reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to actively and constructively engage in the preparatory process for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development. He underscored Pakistan’s objective to ensure that the conference yields a financing for development framework that is more equitable and attuned to the requirements of developing nations.
