Signing an MoU to advance their meteorological cooperation

Beijing: A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to further expand cooperative operations in meteorology and climatology between the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEECAS). The MOU was signed by Dr. Yaohua Li, Director of IEECAS, and Sahibzad Khan, Director General of PMD. According to China Economic Net (CEN), the MoU was signed in front of Prof. Tianhua Hong, the executive director of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences, and Khan Muhammad Wazir, the science counselor at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing.

According to Khan Muhammad Wazir, science counselor at the Pakistani embassy in Beijing, the goal of the MoU is to promote the creation of a VLF/LF lightning detection network in Pakistan in order to enhance PMD’s lightning warning capabilities and lessen the number of people killed and property losses as a result of lightning disasters. Following the signing ceremony, Mr. Khan Muhammad Wazir commended the Chinese side for helping to strengthen Pakistan’s capabilities for disaster management. He observed with delight the expansion of the two nations’ collaboration in technology transfer, information exchange, and capacity-building initiatives in the areas of environmental protection, climate change, and disaster management.
