Caretaker PM applauds Pakistan’s recommendations being included in the SDG Summit Political Declaration in New York
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, has emphasized that Pakistan will work for climate justice, including the fulfillment of the commitment to give more than $100 billion in yearly climate funding at the upcoming CoP28 Summit.
He was speaking at the SGD Summit Leader’s Dialogue in New York, which was held in conjunction with the 78th session of the UN General Assembly and was headlined “Mobilizing finance and investments and the means of implementation for SDG achievement.”
The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan will also request allocation of 50 billion dollars in climate money for climate adaptation and the prompt launch of the Fund for “loss and damage”.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar emphasized that only 12% of the SDG targets are on track eight years after Agenda 2030 was adopted, with the poly-crises of COvid, Climate, and Conflict having wreaked havoc on the economies of developing countries. ‘Morally bankrupt’ global financial system has made this situation worse.
The inclusion of numerous proposals put forth by Pakistan and other developing nations in the SDG Summit Political Declaration was welcomed by the Prime Minister. These proposals included support for the Secretary General’s SDG Stimulus, early capitalization of Multilateral Development Banks, rerouting of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) for development, and reform of the global financial system.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar suggested setting up a Working Group of the General Assembly to make sure that these agreements were implemented right away.
