Türkiye Commends Ethiopia’s Reintegration of Former Combatants, Pledges Continued Support

Islamabad  : H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Special Envoy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, met with the newly appointed Ambassador of Türkiye to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Irfan Neziroglu.

During the meeting, Türkiye expressed its admiration for Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to reintegrate former combatants and pledged its continued support.

Ambassador Dr. Jemal highlighted Ethiopia’s successful national unity drive, which paved the way for the official commencement of the reintegration program for 75,000 former combatants. This initiative represents the first phase of a larger plan to disarm, demobilize and reintegrate over 371,000 former combatants from seven regions within the next two years.

Ethiopian Ambassador emphasized the significance of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, which solidified Ethiopia’s commitment to resolving African problems through African solutions, further strengthening the country’s role as a beacon of peace and security in the Horn of Africa. He also underscored the Ethiopian government’s leadership in addressing regional challenges, including counter-terrorism and internal conflicts.

Furthermore, Ambassador Dr. Jemal outlined Ethiopia’s Macro-economic reform agenda 2.0, aimed at boosting the national economy and enhancing its global competitiveness. He noted the positive outcomes of the homegrown economic reform program, including increased trade flows, growing foreign direct investment, and improved macroeconomic stability. He also highlighted Ethiopia’s contributions at COP 29.

Ambassador Neziroglu commended Ethiopia’s commitment and implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, its subsequent reintegration of former combatants, rapid economic growth, increasing influence on the global stage, and efforts to combat climate change which will be a role model for other countries. He affirmed Türkiye’s commitment to continuing its support for Ethiopia through bilateral and multilateral platforms. Furthermore, they agreed to work closely to advance mutual respect and brotherhood.
