Huawei introduces the world’s first 5.5G-capable product solutions

BEIJING: Huawei has unveiled the world’s first comprehensive solutions for products with 5.5G capabilities during the 14th Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) held in Dubai, UAE. These solutions are designed to deliver a significant advancement in network capabilities, offering a tenfold improvement compared to 5G. Huawei’s innovations in broadband, frequency bands, antennas, and other aspects contribute to these enhanced capabilities.

5.5G, also known as 5G-Advanced technologies, is seen as an intermediate step between 5G and the future 6G technology. It promises to enhance connectivity for people, homes, the Internet of Things (IoT), industries, and vehicles by providing ten times the network capabilities and introducing various new features.

These high-bandwidth, low-latency networks are poised to deliver superior experiences to both consumers and industries. They enable applications such as glasses-free 3D streaming, autonomous driving, smart manufacturing, and broader coverage for IoT devices.

The development of 5.5G fits within the roadmap of international standards for telecommunication set by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). According to 3GPP, there are six technical standards between 5G and 6G, with R15 to R17 representing the first stage of the 5G standard and R18 to R20 signifying the second stage of the 5G standard. In April 2021, 3GPP officially defined the R18 protocol version as 5.5G.
