Inequality in global economic growth creates super-rich and super-poor people: Munir

During the General Assembly’s Second Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs at the United Nations, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, emphasized the need for immediate action to address the severe challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and conflicts worldwide.

Munir Akram pointed out that we are currently witnessing an era of increasing inequality, where the world’s unequal economic growth is leading to the emergence of both a super-rich and super-poor class within the global economic system.

He underscored that the international community already possesses a comprehensive framework to tackle inequality and poverty, rooted in the principles of the UN Charter, particularly the principle of ‘Common but Differentiated Responsibility.’

Munir Akram further noted that the progress made over decades in reducing poverty and hunger has been reversed due to the impacts of COVID-19, climate change, and conflicts. He highlighted alarming statistics, including over 800 million people living in extreme poverty, 2.4 billion people facing food insecurity, and 59 countries experiencing debt distress.
