GELSENKIRCHEN : Spain beat Italy 1-0 to progress to the last 16 of Euro 2024. Ricardo Calafiori’s own goal equalized for Spain.
Young wingers Nico Williams and Spain’s Lamine Yamal are out for the defending champions. Pedri’s second-minute header from Williams’ cross was headed wide by Gianluigi Donnarum, who soon after set the tone for Spain’s dominance.
Despite Italy’s usually strong defence, Donnarumma was forced to head home a 30-yard rocket from Fabian Ruiz in the 25th minute. Italy’s first try was not until the first half was halted and the pressure on coach Luciano Spalletti’s team continued after the break.
The match was broken in the 55th minute. Williams led Alvaro Morata from the left, flicked Donnarumma’s hand and finally headed to the net from Calafiori’s knee.
Spain kept the pressure on with attacks, and Yamamal got clear before Williams shot wide. La Roja will finish top of Group B and face the third-placed team in the last 16, regardless of the result of their last game against Albania on Monday.
Italy must avoid their last group defeat against Croatia to guarantee qualification. The emphasis is on the Azzurri because their goal is to reach the knockout stage and defend their title.
