Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court issued a writ petition challenging the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) report banning the notification. The court allowed media coverage of the proceedings in accordance with the guidelines laid down in the Supreme Court order.
The IHC Chief Justice issued a written order approving the request to adjourn the PEMRA hearing and ordered the case to be heard in the first week of July.
The decision was taken in response to a petition in the Islamabad High Court by the Association of Journalists, the Press Association and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) challenging the PEMRA notification.
On May 24, the IHC responded to a petition to PEMRA and the information secretary challenging the authority’s ban on reporting court proceedings. In today’s notice, the court has stayed PEMRA from taking any action against the TV channel.
The court also issued a notice in connection with a separate petition to set aside the total notice of PEMRA. The move reflects an ongoing legal conflict involving media regulation of court proceedings and the balance between press freedom and judicial integrity.
