World Environment Day 2024 Celebrations on theme of Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience
Islamabad : – Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam highly appreciated the efforts of Pak-EPA and the Pak Mission Society for organizing such a wonderful event. She addressed the students, saying, “You are our future, and it is up to you to restore the planet’s greenery for yourselves and for us.” She emphasized the importance of rejecting single-use plastic bags and expressed her keen interest in working with schools and children.
The Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) and the Pak Mission Society celebrated World Environment Day at Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA). The event was held under this year’s theme: #LandRestoration, #Desertification, and #DroughtResilience.The event’s chief guest was Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. The event was joined by the students, teachers from government and private schools along with other distinguished dignitaries from relevant government departments, industries, Non-Government Organizations, media etc.
The event aims were to raise awareness about climate change, highlight the crucial role of civil society in combating climate change, and encourage individuals to take action towards a sustainable future. The event featured a variety of activities designed to educate participants on climate change and climate action. These activities included engaging debates, informative climate videos, a showcase of tablu and climate models, and a stall dedicated to upcycling and recycling. Each activity aimed to raise awareness and promote actionable steps towards addressing climate issues.
Ms. Farzana Altaf Shah, Director General of Pak-EPA, highlighted the importance of World Environment Day and emphasized that, together with civil society and especially our young generation, we can address the issue of climate change. She specifically thanked Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam for her tremendous efforts and actions in combating climate change.
Mr. Tanwir Ahmad, Director General of the Federal Directorate of Education, conveyed a message to students on “My bottle, My Water.” He also mentioned that work has begun on a three-bin waste management system. He added that very soon, bins will be distributed in all federal schools and colleges to address the issue of solid waste management.
Lastly, Mrs. Kehkahsan Jibran, Chief Strategic Officer of the Pak Mission Society, shared her thoughts on child-driven climate actions. She emphasized the belief that children are game changers in the context of climate actions. She highlighted that the Pak Mission Society is actively taking initiatives for climate change across Pakistan. Additionally, she expressed gratitude to Pak-EPA for their collaborative efforts and partnership with the Pak Mission Society in addressing climate change.
