(APP): Amidst escalating tensions and violence in the region, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) faces challenges to its operations, yet remains steadfast in its commitment to serving vulnerable populations.
Recent events have underscored the precarious situation faced by UNRWA staff in East Jerusalem, where two Israeli arson attacks and ongoing protests have forced the temporary closure of the agency’s office. Despite these adversities, Senior Communications Manager Jonathan Fowler has emphasized that the vital work of UNRWA will persist, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza and escalating settler violence in the West Bank.
The closure of the East Jerusalem office comes after months of demonstrations outside the compound, culminating in arson attacks that threatened the safety of UNRWA personnel and nearby residents. Fowler described harrowing scenes of fires being lit near the office premises and the alarming escalation of violence during protests, which have posed significant challenges to the agency’s operations.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini have condemned these attacks, highlighting the urgent need for protection of UN facilities and personnel. Despite ongoing investigations into the incidents, Fowler noted a broader trend of increased hostility towards UNRWA’s work, exacerbated by inflammatory rhetoric and organized protests.
Protesters have targeted UNRWA staff and facilities, obstructing access to the compound and subjecting personnel to intimidation and harassment. Despite these challenges, UNRWA remains resolute in its mission to provide essential services to Palestine refugees, including healthcare, education, and social support, as mandated by the United Nations General Assembly nearly 75 years ago.
Fowler emphasized that while the closure of the East Jerusalem premises presents operational challenges, UNRWA staff are determined to adapt and continue their work, even amidst the unprecedented levels of violence and humanitarian crisis in the region. He underscored the agency’s unwavering commitment to its mandate, despite efforts to undermine its operations.
In response to the mounting hostilities against UNRWA, donors to the agency have issued robust statements condemning such actions, signaling solidarity with the agency’s mission and affirming their support. As UNRWA navigates these challenges, its dedication to serving Palestine refugees remains unwavering, rooted in its mandate and commitment to humanitarian principles.
