Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his European tour with a state visit to Hungary, emphasizing a desire for a “new journey” with Beijing’s closest European Union ally amidst global tensions over the Ukraine war and trade disputes.

Xi’s visit to Hungary marks his first to the continent since 2019 and comes after stops in France and Serbia. The Central European country has been a focal point for Chinese investment, particularly in the electric vehicle and battery manufacturing sectors.

Upon his arrival in Budapest, Xi was warmly received by Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok and Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Hungary.

In an op-ed published ahead of his visit, Xi highlighted the strong bilateral ties between the two nations, describing the relationship as “mellow and rich as Tokaji wine,” a reference to Hungary’s renowned vineyards. He expressed optimism about the future of Chinese-Hungarian cooperation, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, nuclear energy, and automotive manufacturing.

Orban, known for his eastward foreign policy approach, has sought closer economic ties with China and other Asian countries despite tensions between Western nations and Beijing over various issues.

During his three-day visit, Xi is expected to sign multiple agreements promoting cooperation between China and Hungary, particularly in the areas of rail and road infrastructure, nuclear energy, and automotive manufacturing.

The visit to Hungary provides Xi with an opportunity to avoid contentious conversations and present a positive image of China’s relationship with an EU member state. However, some analysts warn that Xi’s intentions may be to exploit Hungary’s position to undermine EU unity.

Despite divided opinions among Hungarians regarding Chinese investment, the visit underscores the growing economic partnership between China and Hungary, with implications for both countries and the broader geopolitical landscape.

As Xi concludes his visit to Hungary and his European tour, the outcomes of his meetings and the agreements signed are expected to shape future relations between China, Hungary, and the European Union.
