The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is set to convene its 15th session of the Islamic Summit Conference in the Gambian capital city of Banjul on May 4-5, 2024. The conference will address a range of regional and global issues, including Palestine, Islamophobia, climate change, and minorities, under the theme “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development,” as stated in a press release from the OIC General Secretariat.
Prior to the Islamic Summit Conference, senior officials will hold a preparatory meeting on April 30 and May 1, 2024, to discuss session documents and submit a report to the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) preparatory meeting for the Summit, scheduled for May 1-2, 2024. The CFM preparatory meeting will consider the outcomes of the senior officials’ gathering and present its report to the Summit.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha, accompanied by a high-level delegation from the OIC General Secretariat, will travel to Banjul to partake in the session’s proceedings. The leaders of member states will deliberate on various political, economic, humanitarian, social, and cultural issues pertinent to the Islamic world. Additionally, topics such as youth, women, family, science and technology, information, Muslim communities and minorities in non-OIC Member States, and legal matters will be discussed.
The summit agenda will encompass themes such as combatting hate speech and Islamophobia, promoting dialogue, addressing climate change, and ensuring food security. The secretary-general will present a comprehensive report during the summit, reviewing significant activities, programs, and projects undertaken by the OIC since the previous session.
The 15th session will culminate in a final communique, encapsulating the OIC’s positions on the addressed issues, a resolution on Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and the Banjul Declaration.
