SUKKUR : – In a significant step towards fostering rehabilitation and social integration within Pakistani prisons, the Chess Federation of Pakistan (CFP) and the National Academy of Prisons Administration (NAPA) have joined hands today to implement the esteemed International Chess Federation (FIDE) program, ‘Chess for Freedom’. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was formally signed at a ceremony held in NAPA Campus Lahore, marking the commencement of a transformative initiative aimed at introducing chess competitions and activities within correctional facilities across Pakistan.

Under this collaborative endeavor, CFP will extend its expertise in both organization and technical support to orchestrate chess competitions within the confines of Pakistani prisons. Meanwhile, NAPA will play a pivotal role in facilitating and overseeing chess playing activities for inmates, ensuring the smooth execution of the program’s objectives. The MOU signing ceremony saw the esteemed presence of Mr. Azhar Rashid Khan PSP, Director General NAPA, and Mr. Hanif Qureshi, President of CFP, signifying the commitment of both organizations towards this noble cause.

The ‘Chess for Freedom’ program holds immense promise in terms of fostering positive change within correctional facilities. Here are some of the key benefits anticipated from the implementation of this program:

Promotion of Intellectual Stimulation: Chess is renowned for its ability to stimulate cognitive abilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning. By introducing chess within prisons, inmates will have the opportunity to engage in intellectually enriching activities, aiding in their personal development and growth.

Enhanced Social Integration: Chess transcends barriers of language, culture, and background, offering a common platform for individuals to connect and interact. Through chess competitions and collaborative play, inmates will have the chance to build meaningful relationships, fostering a sense of camaraderie and social cohesion within the prison community.

Reduction of Recidivism: Research has shown that engaging in constructive activities, such as chess, can significantly reduce the likelihood of recidivism among former inmates. By providing inmates with a positive outlet for their time and energy, the ‘Chess for Freedom’ program aims to contribute towards breaking the cycle of reoffending, ultimately promoting rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

Empowerment and Self-Confidence: Mastery of chess requires dedication, perseverance, and strategic thinking, qualities that can empower individuals and boost their self-confidence. Through regular practice and participation in chess competitions, inmates can experience a sense of achievement and personal growth, paving the way for a brighter future beyond the confines of prison walls.

Community Engagement and Support: The implementation of the ‘Chess for Freedom’ program underscores the importance of community engagement and support in the rehabilitation process. By partnering with organizations such as CFP and NAPA, the program leverages collective efforts towards promoting positive change and social responsibility within Pakistani society.

Speaking at the MOU signing ceremony, Mr. Hanif Qureshi, President of CFP, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Chess has the power to transcend boundaries and inspire individuals towards positive change. Through the ‘Chess for Freedom’ program, we aim to harness the transformative potential of chess to empower and uplift inmates across Pakistani prisons.”

We are confident that the ‘Chess for Freedom’ program will bring about tangible benefits for both inmates and society at large.”

As the ‘Chess for Freedom’ program sets its course for implementation within Pakistani prisons, it symbolizes a beacon of hope and opportunity for inmates seeking redemption and a second chance at life.
